We were down in Devon last weekend and had a triffic time. Now, normally when we go to North Devon we head to Woolacombe and it's a mad dash to get there as quick as possible, so we shoot straight down the M5 to J27 and then straight across on the Barnstaple road. Well this time we were in no particular hurry so we came off at J25(?) and cut across Exmoor. Blessed with brilliant weather, we had an awesome time. The roads were quiet, the views beautiful (particularly on Dunkery Beacon, where we saw wild ponies) and a thoroughly pleasant time was had. We were staying at Coombe Martin in a BnB called Mellstock House.
The beach at Coombe Martin (certainly at low tide is uber cool, loads of rocks, rock pools and cliffs). The town is a little tired unfortunately, but the BnB was really nice. Good room, good food and friendly hosts. This picture is the view from our room, sorry about the quality, it was taken on my phone...
The next day we tootled along the coast to Ilfracombe and then Appledore where we spent a very pleasant hour just sat in the sun. Then Bev remembered that her antecedants had come from a village called Ashreighny in Devon which, as it turned out, was not far away. So off we set, finding the village (charming), but not the Mannings (sad). From there we headed home...
